Balbir Singh Seechewal

Time in its Heroes of the Environment 2008 has honored Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal who has taken upon himself the task of "cleaning and mending the sewage-ridden, weed-choked rivulet Kali Bein" in Punjab. Here is the link:

Here is the link for an old story on him in Outlook magazine:

I salute him and wish we had such noble souls in my state Tamil Nadu too.

Very impressive!!!

The first step takes courage and the rest follows.

There are many such stories in India. I wonder if these can be catalogued and given prominence.

It will be worth reading about them and even participating in their work rather than the same negative and morbid stuff that we are dished out every day.

I recommend that you also read about Anna Hazare, a social activist from Maharashtra. He has done phenomenal work at his village Ralegaon Siddhi i Maharashtra.

Sure Mavin, heard a lot about him. Also about the Magsaysay award recipients, philanthropist doctor couple Mandakini and Prakash Amte and their contribution towards tribal medical care and education.
